Peterhouse Boys

In September 1951, Edward Paget, Bishop of Southern Rhodesia, wrote to the Rector of Michaelhouse in Natal, offering him the headship of a school that did not exist. Six months later, Fred Snell started working with Canon Robert Grinham and the Ruzawi School Board toward the creation of an independent senior school.

Peterhouse opened in 1955 under the rectorship of Fred Snell with 55 boys and within five years the number had risen to 360.

Peterhouse Girls

When Peterhouse was founded, as a boys-only secondary school, by Fred Snell in 1955 there was no intention of it becoming the Peterhouse Group of Schools (a boys’ school, a girls’ school and a preparatory school). 

In the early 1980s, however, it became apparent that there was a demand for the re-opening of Springvale School (under the name Springvale House) and the establishment of a secondary girls’ school.

Springvale House

The history of the Springvale Estate is the story of people and vision and hard work. Many hands and hearts have created the thriving schools that press forward energetically into the twenty-first century. Yet the struggle to create the original Springvale School, to sustain it, protect and develop it through even the most trying circumstances, is one that cannot be forgotten – or should not be.

Eagle School

Eagle Preparatory was a private boarding school founded in 1948 with 22 boys, in the picturesque Vumba Mountains, near Umtali, Rhodesia (now Mutare, Zimbabwe.) Journalist Geoffrey Nyarota described it as a “prestigious institution for wealthy white boys.” Besides Rhodesians, the school also attracted students from neighbouring Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia…
